Sport NSW has announced the finalists for the 2016 NSW Community Sports Volunteer Awards after numerous volunteers from across the state were put forward by their sports in recognition of their hard work.
New South Wales' most-deserving volunteers will be recognised at an awards ceremony hosted by the Hon. Stuart Ayres, Minister for Sport, in the Strangers’ Room of NSW Parliament House, at 6:30pm on Friday, 19 August 2016.
The NSW Community Sports Volunteer Awards is an all-embracing event that celebrates sporting volunteerism and achievements across the state each year. NSW-based sporting organisations are invited to nominate officials, administrators, coaches and leaders, to ensure the Awards recognise all levels of volunteers in sport.
More than 500,000 people across NSW voluntarily dedicate their time every year through their involvement in sporting clubs and organisations. Without the contribution of those volunteers, community sporting clubs would not exist.
In announcing the finalists Sport NSW Chairperson Joseph La Posta said the judging panel was once again captivated by the level of commitment, passion and dedication displayed by all of the nominees.
“The Community Sports Volunteer Awards is an important event in the state’s sporting calendar, as it provides us with the opportunity to celebrate and acknowledge those whose contribution is the lifeblood of community sport,” Mr La Posta said.
“The tireless efforts our sports volunteers enable our 2.5 million sporting participants across New South Wales to stay healthy, build stronger communities and strive to reach their sporting dreams, which is why recognition events such as this are so important,” said Mr La Posta.
The Awards judging panel brings together a wealth of experience across the sport and community sectors. The judges include sports journalist Amanda Lulham, Paul Sabatier from NSW Volunteering in the Department of Family and Community Services, Margot Zaska, Program Coordinator Disability Sport in the Office of Sport and Sport NSW Chief Executive Officer, Darren Simpson.
This year’s finalists span the full spectrum of sports and include some of the less mainstream sports such as Wheelchair Basketball, Ultimate Frisbee, Motorsport and Orienteering.
