Activate Inclusion Sports Day - Wollongong
Published Tue 15 May 2018
Sport NSW is pleased to announce the upcoming Activate Inclusion Sports Day with partner Variety – the Children’s Charity NSW, to be hosted by Wollongong City Council at Illawarra Sports Stadium on Wednesday 16th May, 2018.
The Activate Inclusion program is a ground-breaking initiative focused on providing sporting pathways for students aged 5 to 18 years with a physical, intellectual or sensory disability. The day also caters for students with learning and mental health difficulties.
The program is delivered with the support of Variety – the Children’s Charity NSW and offers children who are often segregated from main stream school PE due to a lack of adaption knowledge and adaptive equipment, the opportunity to experience a variety of sports in a fun and inclusive environment.
The event will commence with an Opening Ceremony at 9:30am where Wollongong City Lord Mayor Councillor Gordon Bradbery AM will provide an official welcome to the students in attendance. The day caters for up to 100 participants who will then take part in a range of sports on offer, including Basketball, Football, Gymnastics and Netball.
Sport NSW Chief Executive Officer Darren Simpson is delighted to collaborate with Variety – the Children’s Charity NSW and Wollongong City Council across this unique opportunity.
“Sport NSW is thrilled to host this event in conjunction with Variety and Wollongong City Council, and I hope the program inspires the participants to take part in regular sporting opportunities in the community,” Mr Simpson said.
Wollongong City Lord Mayor Councillor Gordon Bradbery AM hopes the event encourages young people in the Wollongong community to enjoy the benefits of participating in sport.
“Staying active and eating healthily can ensure we live happy and productive lives,” Wollongong City Lord Mayor Councillor Gordon Bradbery AM said.
“Setting healthy habits when we are young is essential to help young people in our city enjoy a varied social and sporting life. Sports and team sports can be fantastic for maintaining a healthy weight among children as well as helping with their self-esteem and creating friends. I encourage all of our young people to remain active, join a sport and have a great time.”
Variety – the Children’s Charity NSW Chief Executive Officer David Sexton said every kid, no matter their level of ability should be able to enjoy the fun of playing sport. “Every child deserves the chance to have a go at playing sport. We are proud to partner with Sport NSW and Wollongong City Council so kids of all abilities have the opportunity to try different sports in a fun and inclusive environment,” Mr Sexton said.
“It’s wonderful the students can experience playing side by side, often for the very first time.”
