Sport NSW has supported online training company etrainu in their partnership with the Governance Institute of Australia and the release of the online Sports Governance Program - Working in Sports Essentials (WISE).

Working in Sports Essentials (WISE) is an internet-based course designed to provide fundamental governance knowledge to anyone involved in sport. The program is suitable for everyone from grassroots committee members and club directors to managers and executives of sporting organisations.

Speaking at the launch of the program Sport NSW Chief Executive Officer Darren Simpson endorsed the program, making the point that, "there is simply no better place to start putting good governance practices into action than at the grassroots of sport."

"For so many Australians their sporting journey starts in junior competitions and clubs administered by mums and dads, but the principles of good governance remain the same irrespective of the level of competition. That's why the WISE program is so valuable. It teaches fundamental practices that can applied at all levels of sports administration because the principles remain the same."

The online course is designed to give a broad understanding of governance and good practices. Over seven modules the course addresses:

  • Introduction to governance
  • Why is governance important?
  • The function of the Board
  • Duties and Roles of the Board
  • Financial management
  • Meetings and Current Issues
  • Board performance assessment

Importantly, course participants can tailor the cost effective course to their needs:

  • Only do the modules you need
  • Timely - modules can be done in 30-50 minutes.
  • Mobile optimised! You could do it on the train or bus on your way to work
