Inclusion Sports & Recreation Camp
Published Mon 10 Apr 2017
On 19 - 23 April Sport NSW Disability Inclusion Promotions Officer Murray Elbourn led an inclusion sports camp with participants from physical, intellectual and sensory disabilities. The camp is the first step in providing pathways to support the new Premier Inclusion League for touch football and other sports including AFL, netball and basketball while also growing existing leagues for participants with a disability at Football NSW and Cricket NSW.
Twenty-five participants gathered at the NSW Sport and Recreation centre at Milson Island on the beautiful Hawkesbury River to try a number of sports including new sports to camp such as golf, swimming and abseiling. There was also a focus on social and emotional aspects with games, a disco and a trivia night ensuring good friendships were established and existing bonds were strengthened. The camp was supported by the Department of Education, Independent Schools and Catholic Education.
Sport NSW has just launched its Activate Inclusion Sport Days program in partnership with Variety NSW, The Children’s Charity and this combined inclusion sports and recreation camp is crucial for the full integration of disabilities to build sustainable inclusion participation and competitive inclusion competitions.
The first Activate Inclusion Sport Days date will be Wednesday, 31 May at Blacktown Leisure Centre. The day which is supported by Blacktown City Council will feature 150 participants 18 years and under. The sports on the day will include tennis, futsal, touch football, netball and basketball. Local associations and clubs in the Blacktown LGA will benefit from education programs and support from Sport NSW on and after this day to promote and conduct inclusion related program activities in main stream inclusion leagues for the above sports.
