Knowledge Exchange Inclusion Program for SSO's

Published Tue 11 Apr 2017

Sport NSW is committed to providing superior opportunities to assist mainstream sport in being upskilled to meet the needs of working across the disability and inclusion area. From this a new initiative has been formed called Knowledge Exchange Inclusion (KEI). The KEI program offers an overview of major disability categories including the following:

  • Sensory (Blind and Deaf)
  • Intellectual (Autism and Brain Damage)
  • Physical (Cerebral Palsy, Wheelchair, Medial & Amputee)
  • Mental Health (Depression, Anxiety & Bipolar)

We discuss key information about the spectrum of these categories and speak in depth around experience through sport with them.

The session is interactive where SSO staff, development officers and partners can engage with experienced leaders across the space.

Coaches and Development Officers then create an inclusive coaching session based from their school delivery model, incorporating adaptive equipment and rules to have the best inclusive outcomes from the theory session to the practical session.

Theory session runs for 2 hours, then a 30 minute planning skills, drills and game session followed by the actual practical session delivery with the group and volunteer participants with varying disabilities.

We then gather feedback around the whole 5 hour experience and work on an inclusion school and community delivery model for the SSO.

Sport NSW and NSW Office of Sport will partner on the initial delivery of this program to Football NSW and Netball NSW in a joint session at Genea Netball Central complex in Sydney Olympic Park on Thursday, May 11th.

If your State Sporting Organisation would like more information around the program please contact Murray Elbourn at Sport NSW on 0427186734 or by email at inclusion@sportnsw.com.au
