More Recognition for Female NSW Champions
Published Mon 29 Jan 2018
Six members of the NSW Hall of Champions were honoured over the Australia Day weekend for their service to sport – with the interesting twist being that all were female.
The Australia Day honours recognise Australians for their excellence, achievement or meritorious service and contributions.
Sport NSW introduced the NSW Champions of Sport ceremony in 2017, which for the first time combined the NSW Sports Awards with the induction of NSW sporting greats into the Hall of Champions. Located at Sydney Olympic Park, the NSW Hall of Champions was established in 1979 as the sporting hall of fame for NSW athletes.
The six ladies from the NSW Hall of Champions recognised – Betty Cuthbert, Evonne Goolagong-Cawley, Belinda Clark, Liz Ellis, Heather McKay and Shane Gould – had all previously received formal honours of some kind, with each being elevated in 2018 to a higher honour.
But it did not stop there for NSW sport, with many more people honoured for their service to sport, with much of that service coming at grass roots and community level.
Sport NSW congratulates all honourees on their recognition. A full list appears below.
