Sport: Triathlon
NSW Athlete of the Year: 2006

Brad Kahlefeldt burst onto the triathlon world stage in 2002 when he won the U23 World Championship by more than one and a half minutes in the extremely warm conditions of Cancun, Mexico.

From then on there was no holding back Kahlefeldt who went on to be selected for Australia’s elite team who competed in the triathlon word championships in 2003, 2004, 2005 and 2006 – claiming three World Championship Bronze medals during this period.

Some of Kahlefeldts’ most outstanding moments include taking bronze at the ITU World Championships in 2005 with another two bronze medals in Hamburg 2007 and Budapest 2010.

In 2006, the year he was crowned NSW Athlete of the Year, Brad won four World Cup events, finishing the year with the ITU World number one ranking.  He was also a gold medallist at the Melbourne Commonwealth Games and was honoured with the title of Australian and Oceania Champion.

“2006 was a turning point in my career,” said Kahlefeldt. “I had a lot of podiums on the international circuit but never had a World Cup win or major senior win until two weeks before Commonwealth Games at the ITU World Cup in Doha. Doha gave me the confidence of winning big races and it snowballed from then.”

Brad gained selection for the 2008 Beijing Olympics, however a major setback in the lead up prior to Beijing, a hip bone impingement, forced him to take time off running.

He returned back from that injury in blistering form, which saw him represent Australia again at the 2012 London Olympics. Only a year later Kahlefeldt went on to claim more honours winning the Ironman Busselton 70.3 race.

The cream of NSW Sports stars from both past and present will be celebrated at the NSW Champions of Sport Ceremony to be held at Rosehill Gardens on Monday 27 November 2017.
