In the lead up to the event, we will look back to our past crowned NSW Athlete of the Year and NSW Athlete of the Year with a Disability winners as they share their great joys and triumphs as well as life post their ‘dream year’ with successes both on and off the field.

Sports: Swimming
Events: Freestyle, backstroke, butterfly (S8)
NSW Athlete of the Year with a Disability: 2015 and 2016.

Maddison Elliott has won the Sport NSW Athlete of the Year with a Disability award in the last two years (2015 and 2016), which remarkably follows her wins in the Young Athlete of the Year with a Disability category in 2012, 2013 and 2014.

Elliott represented Australia in both the London (2012) and Rio (2016) Paralympic Games and at the age of 13 became Australia’s youngest athlete to win a medal at the Paralympics after winning gold in the 4x100m freestyle relay, a silver in the 50m freestyle and two bronze medals in the 100m and 400m freestyle.

In 2014 she was awarded the medal of the Order of Australia for her success at the London Games and was later selected for the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, where she won a gold medal in the 100m freestyle in world record time.

Pushing forward from her Commonwealth Games performance, Maddison had a stellar year in 2015.  At the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) Swimming World Championships in Glasgow she won a total of seven medals, winning gold in the 50m freestyle, 100m freestyle, 100m backstroke and the 4x100m freestyle relay 34 points. She won silver in the 4x100m medley relay 34 points and 400m freestyle as well as bronze in the 100m butterfly.

2016 was a mixed year for Maddison, despite suffering some personal setbacks she was still able to qualify for the Paralympics in Rio De Janeiro.

She then took her achievements to new heights – winning three gold and two silver medals. The 50m freestyle was made even more special when Maddison won in world record time, eclipsing the record she already held and in the process becoming the first person in her S8 classification to swim under 30 seconds. She was also part of another World Record in the 4x100m freestyle relay and set a Paralympic record for the 100m freestyle.

Maddison continues to go from strength to strength and is currently in preparation for the Commonwealth Games to be held on the Gold Coast in 2018.

The cream of NSW Sports stars from both past and present will be celebrated at the NSW Champions of Sport Ceremony to be held at Rosehill Gardens on Monday 27 November 2017.
