Sport NSW joined forces with Randwick City Council and the University of NSW (UNSW) to present a Girls Get Active Day on Wednesday 7th June.

The Girls Get Active program is designed to encourage more girls to participate in sport and active recreation, and provide participants with the unique opportunity to engage with champion female athletes achieving success in the sporting domain.

The event took place at the UNSW Kensington Campus, where athletes Maddie Studdon (rugby league), Kate Jenner (hockey), Emma Swanson (Australian rules football), Renee Forth (Australian rules football), Jessica Thornton (athletics) and Prue Watt (swimming and alpine skiing) took part in a panel discussion to share their inspiring stories with over 90 local high-school girls.

The panel discussion was facilitated by Australian Netball Hall of Famer and recently appointed Australian Netball Board Member, Marcia Ella-Duncan OAM. Marcia is passionate about female involvement in sport and created history in 1986, as the first Aboriginal to represent Australia in netball.

At the conclusion of the panel discussion, the students from Brigidine College, Emanuel School, International French School and Matraville Sports High had the opportunity to meet the athlete panellists and experience the various sporting activities on offer including Australian rules football, basketball, cricket, hockey, judo, rugby league and rugby union.

Director of Student Life at UNSW Sydney, Neil Morris said, "UNSW Sydney was delighted to host this event. Increasing participation in sport amongst our students, particularly our female students is a key pillar of our Sport 2025 strategy."

The Girls Get Active program focuses on ensuring females feel encouraged and empowered to pursue their sporting dreams, an initiative that was welcomed by Randwick City Mayor, Cr Noel D'Souza.

"Events such as this help make sure every girl and woman has access to the positive power of sports. Although there is still much to be done, the outlook for women in sports at all levels is looking better than ever and we're pleased to be a part of the change."
