Sport NSW and Coffs Harbour City Council joined forces to present a fun and inspiring Girls Get Active Day on Wednesday 8 November. The event, designed to encourage more girls to benefit from participation in sport and recreation, was held at Sportz Central and involved over 100 girls from four local high-schools, five elite female athletes and five different sports.
The Girls Get Active event commenced at 9:30am where athletes Georgia Breward (AFL), Jessica Messina (boxing), Jennifer Tam (badminton), Rhiannon Byers (rugby) and Shannon Day (futsal) engaged in an interactive panel discussion aimed to motivate the audience of female high-school students to participate in sport and active recreation.
At the conclusion of the panel discussion, the students had the opportunity to meet the panellists and experience the various sporting activities on offer including AFL, badminton, cricket, netball and rugby union.
Sport NSW and Coffs Harbour City Council are committed to supporting the future growth and development of sport and active recreation, which in turn sees people enjoy the benefits provided and maintain a healthy lifestyle.
Girls Get Active events provide a unique opportunity for young females to engage with women achieving success in the sporting domain and to try a range of sports in a fun and safe environment, with each station facilitated by the panellists and/or staff from the state sporting organisations.
Sport NSW Chief Executive Officer Darren Simpson was thrilled to collaborate with Coffs Harbour City Council for the Girls Get Active Day and hopes the event encouraged the female students to participate in sporting activities within their local community.
“Sport NSW was delighted to host this event in conjunction with Coffs Harbour City Council, and I hope the successful young sports women inspired the girls to explore the pathways available to them and pursue their own sporting dreams,” Mr Simpson said.
“Coffs Harbour is no stranger to hosting top female sporting talent. Only recently we’ve had the Women’s Ashes Series and a W-League match, plus we are a regular home for major oztag, touch footy and girls’ soccer tournaments. We’re delighted to support this event and I hope that if the participants only go away with just one message, it is - believe in yourself! You can be whatever you want to be,” said Coffs Harbour Mayor, Councillor Denise Knight.
