Sport NSW attended the International Day of People with a Disability breakfast event on December 2nd at the home of the NSW Business Chamber. The Chamber was proud to recognise members who have made the effort to empower those with a disability to participate to their fullest potential through employment opportunities and to making their business more accessible and inclusive.
Sport NSW received an award for Leadership in the inclusion space for their effort in supporting people with a disability to be active and participate in sport across NSW.
Murray Elbourn was appointed as the Disability Inclusion Promotions Officer at Sport NSW in February 2016. Murray works with State Sporting Organisations to increase opportunities for participation and to establish with sport and key stakeholders new pathways for those people in NSW who want to become more active both at the school and community level.
Sport NSW's ‘Activate Inclusion’ program has seen great results across Australian Rules, Rugby League, Cricket, Football (Soccer), Netball, Hockey, Judo, Triathlon, Athletics, Swimming, and School Sports NSW to name a few. In 2017, Sport NSW will again be a leader within the inclusion space for sport and recreation opportunities. The new Stronger Sporting Communities program will see inclusion become a strong focus to expand the education around inclusion within State Sporting Organisations, Councils, sporting associations and clubs.
Guest speaker and multiple gold medal winner Ellie Cole attended the event and spoke about her Rio experience and her commitment to promoting the Paralympic movement.
Donna Purcell from Commonwealth Bank mentioned in her speech that the Willing to Work report highlights “the right to work is a fundamental human right, but one that far too many older people and people with disability in Australia do not enjoy” reinforcing the need to continue to promote inclusion.
