Sydney International Wheelchair Tennis Open

Singles Finals were held on Saturday 13 January at Sydney Olympic Park, marking the 30th Anniversary of the Sydney International Wheelchair Tennis Open, part of the UNIQLO ITF Wheelchair Tennis Tour.

In the Quad Singles, Australian, Dylan Alcott (VIC), seeded second last week, came up against top seeded David Wagner (USA). In a match that lasted over two hours, Alcott prevailed 3-6 6-4 6-4, coming back from 4-1 down in the final set to power home and clinch the title.

The Women’s Singles saw an entertaining match between number one seed, Yui Kamiji (JPN) and fifth seed Aniek Van Koot (NED). Players pushed through blustery conditions, with Kamiji claiming a 3-6 6-2 6-3 win.

Men’s Singles Rounded out the day, with seventh seed Shingo Kunieda (JPN) taking on second seed, Alfie Hewett (GBR). In a high quality match with a number of long rallies, it was Kunieda that claimed victory 6-4 6-4.

The players will now head to Craigieburn, Melbourne for the Melbourne Wheelchair Tennis Open (ITF 1 Series) at the Hume Tennis and Community Centre, for the last lead-in event for the Australian Open Wheelchair Tennis Championships.
