Vision Camp 2018 Wrap Up
Published Tue 24 Apr 2018
The 2018 Vision Camp was recently held at Sydney Academy of Sport in Narrabeen and supported by Uniting through Ability Links, Charter Plus and ran in partnership with Sport NSW. There were 21 campers aged 11 through 18 years with Low Vision, Partial Deafness, Cerebral Palsy and Intellectual Disabilities who attended this year’s camp.
Campers, councillors and families enjoyed a week of adapted sports and other activities including Rock Climbing and Surfing as part of the Adrenaline Rush program. This program is designed take people with disabilities out of their comfort zone and have them try activities they normally wouldn’t do on their own.
A huge thank you to the State Sporting Organisations who provided staff and came in to run inclusion sport sessions:
- Futsal
- Hockey
- T Ball
- Tennis
- Netball
- Goalball
- Swimming
- Athletics
- Youth Blind Cricket
- AFL
The group held discussions around classification and pathways for the Traditional Paralympic Sports of Goalball, Swimming and Athletics, and has no doubt inspired campers to become Paralympic Athletes of the future.
The camp also encourages social interaction; the group visited Sydney Harbour, let their hair down at a Disco night, and Guide Dogs NSW/ACT spoke about mobility training and techniques to get around and attend more sport and active recreation sessions.
Thanks to the participating sports, Uniting – Ability Links, Charter Plus, Sydney Academy of Sport staff and Vision Australia for their support.
