Sydney 2000: 20 Years On
  Sydney 2000: 20 Years On

Today marks twenty years since Cathy Freeman, a proud Indigenous Australian athlete, lit the Olympic Cauldron marking the Opening Ceremony of the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games.

It was a sporting spectacle like no other, full of golden moments like Cathy Freeman's spectacular 400 metre victory, Ian Thorpe's dominance in the pool and the iconic beach volleyball win of Kerri Pottharst and Natalie Cook at Bondi Beach.

The momentum of a highly successful Olympics transferred to the Paralympics, and astounding levels of competition, administration and public awareness raised the profile of the Paralympic Games to a new high. One of Australia’s most decorated Paralympians, Louise Sauvage, lit the Paralympic cauldron, and Australia went on to top the medal tally.

Australians who lived through the Games - and millions around the world – all have a personal memory and connection with the Games of 2000 in Sydney.

As we relive these memories, we encourage you to share them with the hashtag #MySydney2000 and join the celebration of 20 years since the greatest Games ever, with the Olympic Games running 15 September – 1 October and the Paralympic Games running from 18 – 29 October.

Local Sport Grant Program

Local sports clubs and associations across the state are set to receive a $4.65 million funding boost to assist with ongoing participation in sport and active recreation in NSW.

The Local Sport Grant Program aims to increase regular and on-going participation opportunities in sport in NSW, with funding available across four project types; Sport Development, Sport Event, Sport Access and Sport Facility.

Acting Minister for Sport, Geoff Lee, said the Local Sport Grant Program is crucial in supporting the NSW Government’s commitment to enhance the quality of life of the people of NSW.

“We know that sport is the lifeblood in some local communities and their volunteers work hard to provide opportunities for their residents to get active and experience some normality during this pandemic,” said Mr Lee.

Applications are now open and close at 5pm on Wednesday, 7 October 2020. To learn more about the program, please click here. To download the guidelines, please click here and to apply, please click here.
