Member Protection Information Officer Training
  Member Protection Information Officer Training

Member Protection Information Officers (MPIO) have an important role to play at all levels of sport. The MPIO provides information about rights, responsibilities and options to an individual making a complaint or raising a concern in sport.

MPIO workshops are currently being delivered via video format (“webinar”) as a temporary alternative to face-to-face training. The webinar involves two 1-hour sessions and are currently free for sport and active recreation organisations.

The webinar consolidates online training and focuses on developing the skills needed to deal with people in the MPIO role. Topics covered include:

  • MPIO Roles and Responsibilities
  • Listening and responding effectively
  • Conflict of interest and impartiality
  • Communication and promotion of MPIO
  • Next steps action list
  • Useful resources and contacts

There are multiple courses available during August. Please click here for more information and to book your place.

Impact of COVID-19 on Community Sport

COVID-19 has devastated community sport.

It has created a crisis that threatens the existence of thousands of community sport clubs across Australia, and the communities of members, volunteers, coaches, and families that are involved with them.

In May and June, the Australian Sports Foundation carried out a survey to assess the impact of COVID-19 on community sport. This survey reveals that community sport’s shutdown has damaged the physical and mental health of millions of Australians.

Some of the key findings from this survey include:

  • Over 16,000 community sports clubs at risk of closure;
  • 95% of clubs surveyed have lost money since the onset of COVID-19;
  • Up to 80% of clubs forecast ongoing reductions in core revenue streams (such as memberships, local sponsorships and community fundraising), while 97% of all clubs surveyed face additional COVID-19 related costs;
  • Up to 43% of sports clubs project a decline in volunteering, contributing further to fears about the sustainability of many local community sports clubs.
